Come down fight fans this is a massive card

Forget about UFC 257 and Poirier’s second-round TKO win against McGregor or Usman’s third-round TKO win against Burns at UFC 258 because the most anticipated card for 2021 is almost here. Slated for March 7, UFC 259 is going to feature three huge title fights that will leave fans on the edge of their seats.

In the event’s headliner, current Light Heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz will take on Israel Adesanya for the coveted Light Heavyweight title. Adesanya has been the Middleweight champion since 2019 and will be moving up to the Light Heavyweight division to join Blachowicz. Aside from possibly adding another win under his belt, Adesanya has a lot riding on this fight. If successful, Adesanya will become the fourth man in UFC history to be the champion in two divisions simultaneously with the last to achieve this being Henry Cejudo claiming the title of Flyweight and Bantamweight champion at UFC 253. In UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings, Adesanya ranks much higher than Blachowicz in position 3 compared to Blachowicz’s 15. However, Blachowicz has earnt himself an impressive resume over the years. To take out the Light Heavyweight champion title, Blachowicz defeated Dominick Reyes at UFC 253 last September with a technical knockout, ending Reyes’ four-bout win streak.

Usman vs. Burns

The hugely anticipated Welterweight fight between Usman and Burns is once again on the books with the two expected to meet at UFC 258 on February 14. Originally slated to fight last July at UFC 251, Burns and his coach tested positive to COVID-19 and was forced to pull out, subsequently replaced by Jorge Masvidal. The meet-up was later rescheduled for UFC 256 in December, but Usman required more time to recover from injuries before taking on another opponent.

Coming off the back of two wins in 2020 against tough opponents, Colby Covington and Masdival, Usman will be fighting to maintain his current winning streak and take it from six to seven wins. However, Burns isn’t going to be an easy opponent. The three-time World Champion and World Cup gold medallist has also built his own list of impressive records including defeating former UFC Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in 2020.

Poirier vs. McGregor

Coming off a 40-second knockout of Donald Cerrone, Ireland’s “Notorious” puts himself back in the octagon, taking on Louisiana’s Poirier, who looks to even the score with McGregor for his 2014 defeat.

After fighting once last year, fan favourite Conor McGregor makes his return to the Octagon to take on elite Lightweight and former interim champion, Dustin Poirier. This isn’t the first time that the two will meet with McGregor defeating Poirier at UFC 178 in 2014 with a TKO in the first round. However, Poirier has improved a lot since then defeating Max Holloway and putting up a good fight against the current Lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov. Despite this, McGregor destroyed Donald Cerrone in 2020, making him the fan favourite of UFC 257’s headliner event.

As the co-headliner of UFC 257, Michael Chandler will be making his UFC debut squaring off against Dan Hooker in the Lightweight bout. Other Main Card events will be, Khalil Rountree Jr vs Marcin Prachnio in the Light Heavyweight bout, Brad Tavares vs Antonio Carlos Junior in the Middleweight bout and Matt Frevola vs Ottman Azaitar in the Lightweight bout. In the women’s division, Jessica Eye and Joanne Calderwood will compete in the Flyweight bout and Marina Rodriguez and Amanda Ribas will compete in the Strawweight bout.
